Miz Thang - Outside/Folk Art
Painter, woodworker and lover of obscure blues music Miz Thang creates artwork to honor those musicians closest to her heart. She has recreated the images of BB King, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey, Captain Beefheart and countless others with her whimsically colorful wooden cut-outs. The self-taught folk artist from Hawkinsville, GA classifies herself an “outsider, raw, rebel, folk, whohadada artist.” She eschews paintbrushes in favor of her fingers; when her fingers are in the paint, Miz Thang feels most connected to her art. She feels like she’s passing along some of her own “special brand of mojo.” Created from found objects and objects given to her by others, Miz Thang’s birch wood figures have been on display at the Smith Calloway Banks Southern Folk Art Collection and the Research Center at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. Her blues art has also been on display at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon, GA since 2004.
